Patient story: “Freezing my eggs at 25”

Fertility preservation: Egg freezing at Markham Fertility Centre

In an age where personal choices are becoming increasingly intertwined with societal conversations, Shania Bhopa has positioned herself as a trailblazer. Her decision to freeze her eggs at 25 not only sparked curiosity but also opened the floodgates for discussions on fertility preservation, career planning, and women’s empowerment. On EP27 of My Fertility Podcast, we interview Shania Bhopa @wellbyshania and delve into her inspiring journey, the societal reactions, and the wisdom she has to share with others navigating similar choices.

Freezing eggs at 25

Shania, your decision to freeze your eggs at 25 is wonderful in so many ways. Could you share how it all began?

Shania Bhopa: Absolutely! It all started on Christmas Day in 2022. My sister, who is a physician, and I were enjoying dessert when she brought up a question I had never critically considered: How would I balance my long-term career goals with motherhood? She suggested I look into egg freezing as a proactive option. That conversation was a turning point.

I began researching fertility preservation from a data-driven perspective, analyzing success rates, costs, and procedures. I sought out a clinic run by women with a high live birth rate and supportive staff. After consultations and learning about my options, I decided to move forward.

A Choice Shared with the World

Many women might make this decision privately. What made you choose to share it publicly?

Shania: Initially, I planned to keep it private. I was nervous about how my colleagues, particularly in a male-dominated field, would perceive it. I didn’t want my decision to be seen as unprofessional. However, my sister and boyfriend encouraged me to share my journey. They highlighted the importance of hearing patient stories, which often go untold in the medical field.

When I finally shared my experience on social media, the reactions were overwhelming. Many women reached out, saying my story inspired them to have conversations about fertility preservation with their families or consider consultations themselves. However, not all the feedback was positive.

Navigating Public Reaction

Public reactions can be a double-edged sword. How did you handle the mix of responses?

Shania: I grouped the responses into three categories. The first was incredibly supportive—individuals who resonated with my ambition and were eager to learn more.

The second group came from a place of judgment, often rooted in traditional or cultural norms that didn’t align with my decision. Many of these comments came from men who felt women should adhere to a traditional timeline of marriage and motherhood.

The third group surprised me the most. These were people who genuinely didn’t understand the science of egg freezing. Questions like, “Will you lose all your eggs?” or “Does this mean you can have unprotected sex?” revealed significant gaps in education about fertility.

Empowered by Negativity

Some of those negative comments were harsh. How did you keep your confidence intact?

Shania: I’ve always viewed my online presence as a persona separate from my personal identity. That perspective helped me distance myself from the negativity. In a strange way, the harsh comments fueled my determination. If my openness could help break down stigmas or empower even one woman, it was worth it.

I also found it fascinating how outdated some perspectives were. Some comments seemed like they were from the 1900s, questioning why I wasn’t already married with children. It underscored the need for conversations like these.

The Egg Freezing Journey

Let’s shift focus to the actual process. What was it like going through egg freezing?

Shania: Surprisingly, I didn’t find the process emotionally taxing, likely because I approached it proactively rather than reactively. But there were logistical challenges. Coordinating daily appointments, injections, and medications with my already busy schedule was difficult. For example, I once had to administer a trigger shot in the bathroom at an arena during an event!

Having support made a huge difference. Whether it was my sister helping ice my stomach before injections or friends offering emotional encouragement, their presence eased the process.

A Doctor’s Perspective

Your journey was unique because you documented it on social media, which even your doctor found interesting.

Shania: Yes! My doctor, Dr. Garcia at Markham Fertility Centre, told me she learned things about my experience through my posts that she wouldn’t have known otherwise. It highlighted the value of patients sharing their stories—not just for the public but for medical professionals as well.

Reflections and Viral Impact

It’s been a year since your egg freezing journey began. How do you feel about it now?

Shania: I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Reflecting on the journey has given me a deeper appreciation for what it means to take control of my future. Interestingly, my reflections went viral again when I shared them six months later, even more than the initial story.

Now, many of my friends are revisiting their own plans and considering fertility consultations. It feels incredible to have sparked that dialogue. I’ve even had the chance to appear on platforms like The Today Show to talk about this journey.

Myth-Busting: Addressing Common Concerns

Let’s address some common misconceptions about egg freezing. For instance, does it deplete all your eggs?

Answer: Not at all. Egg freezing doesn’t impact your overall egg reserve or accelerate menopause. The process uses the eggs already selected for that particular cycle.

Are there long-term effects?

Answer: No, there are no known long-term effects. The process involves a short period of hormone elevation, similar to what happens naturally during pregnancy.

What about success rates?

Answer: Success depends on your age when you freeze your eggs. Younger eggs tend to have higher success rates. For example, eggs frozen at 25 have a significantly higher chance of resulting in a successful pregnancy compared to eggs frozen at 40.

Shania’s Message to Women

What do you want women to take away from your story?

Shania: We’re taught to be strategic about our careers; we should be just as thoughtful about our family planning. Fertility preservation is about understanding your options and making informed choices.

Also, talk about fertility openly—at home, with friends, and in your community. The more we break down stigmas, the more empowered we all become.

What’s your advice for women in their 20s or 30s thinking about fertility preservation?

Shania: My biggest advice is to start the conversation, whether it’s with a doctor, a partner, or your friends. Fertility preservation isn’t a one-size-fits-all decision. It’s about knowing your body and options, and making the choice that aligns with your life goals.

Shania Bhopa’s story is more than a personal journey—it’s a call to action for women everywhere. Her decision to freeze her eggs at 25 has not only empowered her but has also inspired countless others to take control of their reproductive futures.
