Ontario Fertility Tax Credit Tips: Save Money on Your Fertility Treatments
Have you ever looked at your bank account after a fertility consultation and felt your heart sink just a little? At Markham Fertility Center, we get it.
Building a family is supposed to be about hope. It’s about the future. But in Ontario, it often feels like it’s mostly about the cost. Between $15,000 IVF cycles and the high price of medications, the “sticker shock” is real.
But what if we told you that you could get a check back from the government for $5,000 or more?
That’s where the Ontario Fertility Tax Credit comes in. Most people have heard of it, but very few actually know how to squeeze every single drop of value out of it.
If you aren’t careful, you’ll leave money on the table. And in the world of fertility, that’s money that could be going toward your next round of treatment or your child’s future.
Today, we are going to show you exactly how to navigate the Ontario tax system like a pro. We’re going to cover the eligibility “loopholes,” the hidden expenses you didn’t know you could claim, and our personal “power tips” for maximizing your refund.
Ready? Well, let’s get right into it.
What is the Ontario Fertility Tax Credit?
First things first: what are we actually talking about?
The Ontario Fertility Tax Credit (OFTC) is a provincial program designed to offset the costs of assisted reproductive technology.
But here is what makes this credit special: It is refundable.
Most tax credits are “non-refundable,” meaning they can only reduce the tax you owe to zero. If you don’t owe taxes, you don’t get anything back.
But a refundable credit is different. Even if you didn’t pay a penny in provincial income tax this year, the government will still cut you a check for the credit amount. It’s essentially a 25% “cash back” program on your first $20,000 of eligible expenses.
The Math:
- Max Eligible Expense: $20,000
- Credit Rate: 25%
- Maximum Refund: $5,000 per year
And here is the kicker: you can stack this on top of the Federal Medical Expense Tax Credit. When you combine both, the savings start to look very, very interesting.
Who Can Claim the Fertility Tax Credit?
We see people asking this all the time: “Do I qualify if I’m single?” or “What if we aren’t married?”
The answer is almost always yes.
Ontario has made this program incredibly inclusive. Here is the breakdown of who can claim:
- Couples (Married or Common-Law): Only one of you can claim the credit, but you can pool both partners’ expenses together.
- Single Parents: You are fully eligible to claim 25% of your out-of-pocket costs.
- 2SLGBTQIA+ Families: The credit covers treatments like donor insemination and costs related to surrogacy.
- Surrogacy Intended Parents: As of 2025, you can claim medical expenses paid on behalf of a gestational carrier within Canada.
The “Catch”: You must be a resident of Ontario on December 31st of the tax year. If you move to Vancouver in November, you lose the credit for that year. Stay in Ontario, get the check. It’s that simple.
Which Fertility Treatments Are Covered?
This is where most people get confused. They think it’s just for the “big” procedures.
It’s not.
If it’s medically necessary to help you conceive, it’s probably covered. At Markham Fertility Centre, we see patients claim a wide range of services.
The “Must-Claim” List:
- IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): All phases, including egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
- IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): Every cycle counts.
- Prescription Meds: This is the big one. If your doctor prescribed it and it has a Drug Identification Number (DIN), it’s eligible.
- Laboratory Fees: Things like ICSI, genetic testing (PGT-A), and sperm processing.
- Cryopreservation: The fees you pay to store your eggs, sperm, or embryos.
- Travel Costs: If you have to travel more than 40km (one way) for treatment, you can claim mileage and parking. If it’s over 80km, you can even claim meals and hotels.
What to Avoid: Don’t try to claim your prenatal vitamins or your yoga membership. If it didn’t come with a medical prescription or a clinic invoice, the CRA will likely bounce it. Stick to the medical stuff.
How to Claim the Fertility Tax Credit
Now, let’s talk about the “how.” You don’t want to be scrambling on April 29th.
The secret to a big tax refund isn’t just knowing the law, it’s organization.
Step 1: The “Shoebox” Method (But Digital)
Stop saving paper receipts. They fade. Scan everything. Every pharmacy slip, every clinic invoice.
- Pro Tip: Ask our team at MFC for your Annual Statement of Medical Expenses. We can provide a single, clean document that summarizes your entire year. It makes your accountant’s life (and yours) much easier.
Step 2: Use Form ON479
When you file your T1 General (your personal tax return), you need to fill out Form ON479, Ontario Credits. This is where you actually do the math to calculate your refund.
Step 3: Claim the Federal Credit First
Don’t forget the Federal Medical Expense Tax Credit. You list your expenses there first to lower your federal tax, then you use those same expenses to trigger the Ontario refund. It’s called “double-dipping,” and in this case, it’s 100% legal.
Step 4: Keep Your Receipts for 6 Years
The CRA loves to audit medical claims. They aren’t accusing you of lying; they just want to see the proof. Keep your digital folder backed up. If they ask, you send the PDF, and the case is closed.
Maximizing Your Savings
You want to get the maximum $5,000 refund, right? Here are three strategies most people miss:
Strategy #1: The 12-Month “Rolling” Window
Did you know you don’t have to claim expenses based on the calendar year? You can choose any 12-month period ending in the tax year.
- Why this matters: If you had a cycle in December 2025 and another in February 2026, you can group them together to ensure you hit that $20,000 cap and get the full $5,000 back.
Strategy #2: Give the Claim to the Lower Earner
This is counterintuitive. Usually, you want the high earner to take the deductions. Not here. The medical expense threshold is 3% of your net income (up to a certain cap). If you earn $40k, your “deductible” is only $1,200. If you earn $150k, it’s much higher. By having the lower earner claim the expenses, you unlock the credit much faster.
Strategy #3: Don’t Forget the Needles
It sounds small, but the cost of syringes, needles, and disposal containers adds up. If they were required for your prescribed meds, they are eligible medical expenses. Every dollar counts toward that 25% refund.
Other Financial Supports for Fertility Treatments
The tax credit is great, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. If you want to be smart with your money, you need to look at the whole picture.
- Ontario Government-Funded IVF: Ontario funds one “full” IVF cycle for residents under 43. The waitlists can be long, but it’s “free” (minus the cost of drugs). Many of our patients use the funded cycle first, then use the tax credit for any additional treatments or frozen embryo transfers.
- Workplace Benefits: We are seeing more and more companies (like Amazon, Starbucks, and the big banks) offering $10k–$20k in fertility coverage. Check your handbook. If your insurance pays for it, you cannot claim it on your taxes, but it saves you more money upfront!
- Fertility Financing: If the upfront cost is the barrier, look into financing like Humm. It lets you spread the cost over months, making it a predictable line item in your budget rather than a giant one-time hit.
At the end of the day, the Ontario Fertility Tax Credit is about one thing: Accessibility.
It’s the government saying, “We know this is hard, and we want to help.” By being organized, choosing the right 12-month window, and pooling your expenses correctly, you can save thousands of dollars. That is money that reduces your stress and lets you focus on your health and your future child.
But don’t just take our word for it. Tax rules change, and every situation is unique.
