Oocyte freezing (using the woman’s unfertilized egg cell only) is now a reality as well. In the past, the survival rate of thawed frozen eggs was quite poor. Vitrification (rapid freeze) of oocytes has changed this process completely.
This option is especially beneficial to women recently diagnosed with cancer who need to have their eggs frozen prior to chemotherapy treatment for their disease.
The process for retrieving the eggs for oocyte freezing is the same as IVF. But, in this case, the eggs will be frozen before fertilization occurs.
