About Funding and Costs of Fertility Services

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers all standard fertility consultations and diagnostic tests for patients with a valid OHIP card, with a few exceptions. For many, this allows you to start your journey without worrying about upfront costs. Depending on your situation, more advanced tests may be required. Our team will always explain the tests and procedures along with their associated fees in advance, and we have a dedicated team member to answer questions so you can properly plan and make decisions regarding your care. To make understanding fees easier, we have summarized costs below. In addition, you can find a high-level overview of each treatment on their specific page, where the service is explained.

Fertility Treatments

Ontario Fertility Program (OFP)

Markham Fertility Centre participates in the Ontario Fertility Program, which provides some funding for fertility treatment. Not all fertility clinics in Ontario have access to funding.

Access to government-funded fertility services is available to eligible patients for all forms of infertility, including medical and non-medical infertility, such as for single people or same sex couples. It is also open to those who require a donor or surrogate.  Access to the program is not based on gender, sexual orientation or family status.

Under the Ontario Fertility Program, the government contributes to the funding of:

  • Unlimited cycles of artificial insemination (AI), including intra-uterine insemination (IUI) within the limits of the budget allocated to Markham Fertility Centre
  • One cycle of fertility preservation (FP) for medical reasons (sperm or egg preservation), per patient per lifetime
  • One cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) per patient per lifetime where the egg provider is under the age of 43
  • One additional cycle of IVF per lifetime if a patient has acted or is acting as a surrogate, where the egg provider is under the age of 43

The Ontario Ministry of Health published information about the Ontario Fertility Program on their website. Click on this link to go there now.

Financing Fertility Treatments and Other Options

Paying for advanced reproductive services can be a challenge and patients seldom have the opportunity to defer treatment given the influence of age on treatment success. Many feel anxious to act sooner rather than later and feel pressured by the financial demands. Here are some approaches for consideration.

Fertility Friends Foundation is a registered Canadian charity that provides educational resources and financial support for families going through fertility treatments.  They offer grants to cover expenses associated with assisted reproduction such as IVF, egg and sperm donation and gestational surrogacy.
