Baseline Pelvic Ultrasound

Baseline Pelvic Ultrasound

3D Pelvic Ultrasound with Antral Follicle Count

About the Exam

A 3D pelvic ultrasound with antra follicle count (AFC) is often referred to as a baseline ultrasound exam and is performed between Day 21 and Day 25 of the menstrual cycle. A baseline exam is a standard investigative ultrasound performed on all patients referred for fertility.

The exam is performed in two steps and is intended to assess the uterus and ovaries for any anomalies. We also do an antral follicle count (AFC) of your ovaries, which is a measure of your egg reserve. The exam takes about 30 minutes to complete and is performed at CARE Imaging adjacent to Markham Fertility Centre by a sonographer who focuses almost exclusively on fertility.

A baseline ultrasound is also done prior to the start of some treatment cycles. The results of this scan will be compared with your previous ultrasounds to ensure there are no changes that may affect your upcoming cycle.

Steps to Preparing for a Baseline Ultrasound

  • 1 Call CARE Imaging when you get your period, Tel: (905) 294-4291. Hrs: Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • 2 The receptionist will book an appointment that falls between Day 21 and Day 25 of your menstrual cycle.
  • 3 One (1) hour prior to the appointment finish drinking 1L (32 ounces) of water. It is important that you have a full bladder for the first part of the exam.
  • 4 When you arrive for your appointment, you will change into a gown and proceed to the ultrasound area. Notify the sonographer of any allergies to latex and whether there are any other conditions that may affect the examination.
  • 5 First, the sonographer will perform the abdominal exam using a probe on your belly. Once completed, you can empty your bladder.
  • 6 Next, the sonographer will perform the transvaginal ultrasound exam, which is done with a special camera that allows the sonographer to visualize the uterus and ovaries with greater detail and accuracy.  The exam is generally painless, but you can expect to feel some pressure and movement of the probe.
  • 7 The exam last about 30 minutes.

ALLERGY ALERT : Notify the sonographer if you have a latex allergy.
