Follicle Tracking Ultrasound

About Follicular Tracking

Follicular tracking (monitoring) is an important part of a fertility treatment cycle, whether you are doing an intercourse cycle, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in-vitro fertilization (IVF), or egg freezing.  A transvaginal ultrasound is performed during the menstrual and/or follicular phase(s) of your cycle to monitor the growth of your follicles and the thickness of your uterine lining.  Ultrasound monitoring generally begins early in the cycle (depending on the type of treatment) and is repeated at regular intervals leading up to the day when the follicles appear mature.  During the exam, you will see the sonographer record the number and size of each follicle.  The doctor will use this information to help determine the best time to trigger you for an IUI or IVF procedure.

Follicular tracking appointments are in the mornings and are relatively short lasting about 10 to 15 minutes. The number of exams required during a cycle varies.

Steps to Prepare for a Follicle Tracking Ultrasound

  • 1 Report the first day of your period (first day of full flow) on the patient portal.
  • 2 Your nursing team will book your first follicular tracking ultrasound. Appointment details will be found on your patient portal. You do not need a full bladder.
  • 3 When you arrive for follicle monitoring, check in with concierge and Care Imaging reception. You will likely complete blood work first and then have a seat in the Care Imaging waiting room. Their receptionist will call your name and tell you what change room you should go to.
  • 4 Empty your bladder and then change into a gown, disrobing everything from the waist down. You will then wait in your changeroom until a sonographer calls your name, at which point you will enter the ultrasound room.
  • 5 Once your ultrasound is complete, you will change and then review your ultrasound results with your nurse coordinator in their office.
  • 6 A transvaginal ultrasound will be performed to assess your uterine lining and ovaries. The number and growth of your follicles will be tracked.

ALLERGY ALERT : Notify the sonographer if you have a latex allergy.
