Egg Donation
Sometimes, it takes a village...
About Using an Egg Donor
Egg donation is a process whereby a person or couple receives eggs from another person in order to conceive a child. The egg donor voluntarily underwent ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval for the purpose of donating their eggs. Egg donation may be a consideration for patients who are unable to become pregnant using their own eggs or who do not have eggs available to use. You may be an appropriate candidate for using donated eggs under the following circumstances:
-
You have decreased ovarian reserve (low egg number) and/or poor quality eggs
-
You are over the age of 43
-
You are a single male or a same-sex male couple
-
You have a medical condition (i.e. endometriosis, cancer treatment) that has negatively impacted your egg quantity/quality
-
You want to prevent transfer of a genetic condition to your child
There are two main types of egg donation:
There are many things to consider when choosing to proceed with donor eggs, whether it is from a known or anonymous donor. When making these decisions it is important that your clinical team support you with proper and timely information and guidance. This is why Markham Fertility has created a dedicated team whose only function is to assist patients using a donor and/or surrogate to create their family.
What Does Your Journey Look Like?
Your Journey Using 'Known' Egg Donation Begins Here
One approach to obtaining donor eggs is to use a known egg donor - a friend or family member.
One approach to obtaining donor eggs is to use a known egg donor - a friend or family member. They will participate in an IVF cycle essentially. The known egg donor process is more involved and can take longer than using an egg bank/agency, especially if you have not yet found an egg donor. Below we outline the typical pathway for Known Egg Donation.
Your Journey Using 'Anonymous' Egg Donation with an Agency Begins Here
Anonymous egg donation is a more common option for patients on the path to parenthood.
Anonymous egg donation is a more common option for patients on the path to parenthood. Markham Fertility Centre works with a number of donor egg agencies. All potential donors undergo screening at MFC in accordance with Health Canada regulations.
Your Journey Using 'Anonymous' Egg Donation with an Egg Bank Begins Here
Markham Fertility Centre works with a number of Health Canada-approved donor egg banks.
Anonymous egg donation is less involved, but also tends to cost a little more. The journey is faster because you are selecting an egg donor from a pool of people that have already been screened and approved. They have completed all testing and the eggs are generally ready to be transferred to our lab. There is no need for a legal agreement with the donor, although you may want legal advice when signing the agreement to purchase eggs from the bank.
