About Our Genetics Program
Genetic testing has become an integral part of reproductive medicine and has helped many be more informed when making important reproductive decisions that have consequences for their reproductive options and health of their offspring.
Markham Fertility Center is proud to have on-site genetic counsellors. Diane Myles-Reid leads our genetics program and shares her vast expertise with all patients pursuing Carrier Screening (ECS), Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT), and Prenatal Testing. Consultations with one of our genetic counsellors will cover the types of tests you can take, what is involved in doing those tests, interpreting test results, and counselling so you can make informed decisions about your care and treatment. Markham Fertility Centre hosts webinars several times a week on PGT, prenatal testing and Expanded Carrier Screening.
You might need or consider genetic testing in the folloircumstances:
-
Expanded Carrier Screning
-
Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
-
Pre-Natal Gentic Testing
There are three main areas for which genetic testing is used in reproductive medicine. (1) Genetic tests can help identify potential causes of infertility (2) tests can help preventing transmission of genetic diseases to offspring; and (3) tests can help reduce the time to pregnancy when using advanced assisted reproductive techniques like IVF.

Ovarian Stimulation (10-12 days)
Stimulating your ovaries to produce eggs typically lasts 10-12 days. During this time you will be taking injectable medications and will have 3-5 in-person morning appointments at the clinic where we will monitor your hormones and measure ovaries using a vaginal ultrasound. Your physician will closely monitor your stimulation to ensure the optimal number of eggs.
Egg Retreival (~Day 12)
Prepare to spend 1-2 hours at the clinic on the day of egg retrieval and arrange for someone to pick you up. The egg retrieval itself is done under deep sedation with an anesthesiologist to ensure your safety and comfort and last only 20 minutes. The procedure lasts approximately 20-minutes. You may experience minor discomfort after the procedure. Most patients resume normal activities the next day.
Post Egg Retreival
After the retrieval, your eggs will be evaluated and frozen by our expect embryologist team using a technique called vitrification. Our embryologist will let you the quality and number of eggs that have been frozen before you leave the clinic. Your eggs will be kept in a secure environment for storage until you need the again.
