Naturopathic Medicine for Fertility: Support for your fertility journey

An interview with Dr. Moira Kwok, Registered Naturopath Doctor

On EP48 of My Fertility Podcast, we delve into the role of naturopathic medicine in fertility with Dr. Moira Kwok, a registered naturopathic doctor with a passion for helping couples navigate infertility. Dr. Kwok’s own five-year fertility journey led her to this field, and now she dedicates her practice to supporting others. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Kwok!

Dr. Kwok: Thank you for having me!

Understanding Naturopathic Medicine in Fertility

For those unfamiliar with naturopathic medicine, can you explain what it is—and what it isn’t?

Dr. Kwok: Absolutely! Naturopathic medicine is a holistic, evidence-based approach to health that integrates nutrition, lifestyle, supplements, and sometimes acupuncture to optimize well-being. I view each patient like a puzzle, putting together the pieces of their health to guide them toward their fertility goals.

What it isn’t is an alternative to conventional medicine. I work collaboratively with fertility doctors, physiotherapists, and other healthcare providers. It’s not about rejecting medical treatments but enhancing them with complementary care. Unfortunately, naturopathic medicine is sometimes misrepresented online, as the industry isn’t equally regulated across Canada. In some provinces, a weekend course could let someone call themselves a “naturopath,” whereas in Ontario, we must graduate from an accredited school, pass board exams, and register with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO).

That’s a great explanation. How can patients identify legitimate naturopathic doctors?

Dr. Kwok: Look for practitioners registered with CONO. Avoid websites making unrealistic guarantees like, I will get you pregnant in six months! Also, in Ontario, naturopaths cannot have testimonials on their websites, so if you see those, it’s a red flag.

When to See a Naturopathic Doctor for Fertility Support

At what stage in their fertility journey should someone see a naturopathic doctor?

Dr. Kwok: In a perfect world, people would see me before they start trying, especially if they have conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) or endometriosis or a family history of infertility. This allows us to optimize their health early.

But in reality, most patients come to me after struggling to conceive or after multiple failed fertility treatments. Some are already at a fertility clinic and looking for additional support. The good news is, it’s never too late to start!

What to Expect at a Naturopathic Fertility Appointment

If someone books an appointment, what does that first visit look like?

Dr. Kwok: The first two appointments are about an hour each. In the first, we cover menstrual health, fertility history, past treatments, lifestyle, nutrition, and any lab work or ultrasound results they have.

Many patients appreciate this appointment because I can explain their fertility clinic results in more depth. Often, when they see their fertility doctor, they get a lot of information at once and don’t have time to process it all. I help answer lingering questions and ensure they understand their treatment plan.

How Naturopathic Medicine Complements Fertility Treatments

Some people think they must choose between conventional fertility treatment and naturopathic care. How do the two work together?

Dr. Kwok: They absolutely can work together! Many patients worry that seeing a naturopath is “cheating” on their fertility doctor, but that’s not the case.

Fertility specialists and naturopathic doctors share the same goal: a healthy pregnancy. My role is to fill in the gaps—helping patients manage stress, optimize nutrition, and ensure they take the right supplements.

Patients often arrive with a “laundry list” of supplements they found online. My job is to streamline this, ensuring they take only what’s beneficial and safe for their specific situation.

How to Choose High-Quality Supplements

Speaking of supplements, how can patients ensure they’re taking high-quality products?

Dr. Kwok: This is my favorite soapbox topic! The supplement industry is massive, and not all products are created equal. Here are five key questions to ask:

  1. Do I actually need this supplement? Just because it’s trending on Instagram doesn’t mean it’s necessary.
  2. Is this the right form of the nutrient? Some are more bioavailable (easier for the body to absorb) than others.
  3. What is the correct dosage? Don’t buy something requiring ten pills per day when a better version exists.
  4. Has the product been third-party tested? Ask for a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Companies serious about quality will be happy to provide this.
  5. Is the supplement free of contaminants? Fish oils, for example, should be tested for mercury and heavy metals.

If a company won’t release its COA, be cautious. Some will say, “Trust us, it’s good!” but won’t show proof. That’s a red flag.

Diet & Lifestyle for Fertility

What are your general recommendations for nutrition and lifestyle?

Dr. Kwok: I take a realistic approach. My goal is to help patients fuel their bodies without making them feel restricted. A few core principles:

  • Follow a Mediterranean-based diet – rich in fiber, healthy fats, lean proteins, and minimal refined sugar.
  • Follow the 80/20 rule – eat well 80% of the time, but don’t deprive yourself. You have to enjoy life!
  • Ensure adequate protein intake – the amount varies by activity level and body type.
  • Avoid extreme calorie restriction – under-eating can negatively impact fertility.
  • Vitamin D is essential – most Canadians are deficient, so supplementation is key.

The Role of Stress & Mental Health in Fertility

Fertility struggles are stressful. How do you address that with your patients?

Dr. Kwok: Stress doesn’t directly cause infertility, but it does impact overall health. I help patients manage stress realistically—because telling someone, “just relax!” isn’t helpful!

We also discuss sleep, movement, and mindset. Fertility treatment is a marathon, not a sprint, so optimizing emotional well-being is just as important as physical health.

Final Thoughts:

What is one message you want every fertility patient to take away?

Dr. Kwok: I always tell my patients: When you reach the end of your fertility journey—whether you have a baby, multiple babies, or move forward in a different way—I want you to be able to say, “I did everything I could.” No regrets. No “what ifs.” Just knowing that you gave it your best shot.

The journey is tough, but when you know you left no stone unturned, you can move forward with peace.

That’s such a beautiful sentiment. Thank you, Dr. Kwok, for your time and expertise!

Dr. Kwok: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure!
