About Egg Freezing

Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, allows for greater autonomy in childbearing than was possible even five years ago. Fertility rates decline with age despite the best fertility treatments and having younger, better-quality eggs available in the future can vastly improve pregnancy rates. Egg freezing is a process in which eggs (oocytes) are extracted, frozen, and stored as a method to preserve reproductive potential. The technique is becoming more common today, with some companies even offering coverage through their insurance plans. Over the past few years, techniques have improved immensely and have led to improved overall success rates.

You should consider egg freezing if:

  • IUI_Icon

You would like the possibility of having children in the future but you are not ready to conceive now

  • IUI_Icon

You are approaching age 30 and are not ready to have children at this time

Egg freezing can be empowering by giving greater control over reproductive decisions and enabling the pursuit professional or personal goals without giving up on plans to have a family.

Your Egg Freezing Journey Begins Here

An egg freezing cycle typically takes 2-3 weeks to complete. Some patients may benefit from multiple cycles. The decision on how many cycles you choose will depend on your family goals (how many children you wish you have), the number of eggs retrieved, and the quality of your eggs.

Consultation

The first step is to determine whether egg freezing is the right approach given your personal circumstances, medical history, and goals. Generally speaking, it takes about two months from the initial consultation before you might be ready to start an egg freezing cycle.

Meeting your Care Team

Your dedicated care team will provide you with appropriate and timely instructions so that you feel in control.  You will complete consent forms and participate in an education session where you will learn how to administer medications.  Our goal is your comfort- never be afraid to ask questions!

Ovarian Stimulation (10-12 days)

Stimulating your ovaries to produce eggs typically lasts 10-12 days. During this time you will be taking injectable medications and you will have three to five in-person morning appointments at the clinic where we will monitor your hormones and measure your ovarian follicles using vaginal ultrasound.  Your physician will closely monitor your stimulation to ensure the optimal number of eggs.

Egg Retrieval (~Day 12)

Prepare to spend one to two hours at the clinic on the day of egg retrieval.  You will also need to arrange for someone to pick you up.  The egg retrieval itself is done under deep sedation with an anesthesiologist to ensure your safety and comfort.  The procedure lasts approximately 20 minutes.  You may experience minor discomfort after the procedure. Most patients resume normal activities the next day.

Post Egg Retrieval

After the retrieval, your eggs will be evaluated and frozen by our expert embryologist team using a technique called vitrification.  Our embryologists will speak with you before you leave the clinic and review the quality and the number of eggs.  Your eggs will be kept in a secure environment for storage until you are ready to use them.
