As a part of your protocol, your doctor has prescribed you Luveris 150 unit injections. To get started, you'll need two boxes of Luveris, which you'll pick up from your Markham Fertility Centre dispensary. You'll need an alcohol swab, a subcutaneous needle, a 3 mL syringe, and a Q cap.

To start, you'll open your Luveris. And inside each box you'll see a vial with powder and a vial with liquid, the diluent.   To make your 150 IU dose you will need two powders and one liquid. The other one you can discard. So two powders, one liquid to make your Luveris 150 IU. You'll take off the caps from the vials.   Then you'll open your alcohol swab and clean the top of each vial.

Then you'll open your Q cap  and start by putting the Q cap onto the vial that has liquid inside.   Next, you'll use your 3 mL syringe   and you'll twist that onto the top of the Q cap. Turn it upside down, and pull back about 1 mL of fluid.  And if you have a little bit more than a mil in your syringe, that's okay. We're going for about one mil, and then you'll twist that off and set your syringe on something clean,  and then pull the Q cap off of the diluent. And pop it onto the first vial with powder.

You'll take your syringe with fluid inside, twist it onto the Q cap, and then you'll push the fluid into that powder powder and you'll see that it will dissolve pretty quickly from a white powder into a mostly clear liquid. And when that's all dissolved. You'll flip it upside down and pull back all of the fluid out of that vial. So all the fluid you can get outta that vial. We want back into the syringe. Then you'll twist this off and again, you'll set your syringe on something clean. Pull the Q cap off of this powder vial.    And pop it onto your next powder vial.

Then you'll take your syringe again, twist it onto this Q cap, push that fluid into the next Luveris 75 powder vial. Mix it around again until that white powder is dissolved into a mostly clear liquid, and then you'll turn that upside down draw all that fluid again back into your syringe. So everything you can get outta that vial, we're gonna put back in the syringe and then you'll leave a little bit of air at the top.  Twist off that Q cap. And now you'll put on your needle tip. So you'll get your subcutaneous needle, twist it onto the top of the syringe, make sure it's nice and tight, and then try to just kind of flick out any air bubbles that you might see in there. And push the fluid up to the top until a bleb comes out the top of the needle tip.

And it'll be around 1 mL there might be a little bit more, a little bit less kind of depending on how the mixing went when you were diluting it. But you'll be at about 1 mL and now your Luveris 150 IU dose is ready for injection.

How to Perform a Subcutaneous Injection

Now that you have your medication prepared, here's a video on how to perform a subcutaneous injection.

First, these injections are going to go into your abdomen. So you'll pick a spot two fingers away from your belly button and inject anywhere in your tummy.

The injection is going into that fatty layer of tissue right under the skin. So two fingers away anywhere in your tummy, just like this.
When you're doing your injections, you'll pick a spot, and then you'll rotate your sites. So try not to poke into exactly the same spot as you did already today or yesterday. Try to rotate the spots a little bit. Even a finger away is helpful.

When you're ready, you'll use an alcohol swab to clean the area that you're going to inject into, and then you'll give that a few seconds to dry. You'll take the cap off of your prepared needle and pinch your skin where you're going to do the injection. You'll inject at 90 degrees all the way in. Push the plunger on the syringe down until all of the medication has been delivered.

Then you can relax your skin and pull out the needle. A little bit of blood, a little bit of liquid might come out. That's okay. It's normal. You can use a tissue to hold the spot until the bleeding stops.

And then when you're done, make sure that you put your used needle into a sharps container or your medical waste bag.
