As a part of your protocol, your doctor has prescribed an Ovidrel injection. This medication is a one-time use pen, and it is kept in the fridge until you're ready to use it.

When it's time to do your injection, and you'll be given a specific time to do it, you'll take your Ovidrel pen out of the fridge, and you'll open the box by pulling on this tab. Inside the box, you'll have a pen and a needle tip. They give you an extra one just in case. You'll only need one needle tip for this medication.

You'll take the lid off the pen and you'll see that there's 250 units of medication ready to go in this pen. To prepare to do the injection, you'll start by taking the paper tab off of the needle and you'll twist that onto the top of the pen until it's nice and snug. And then you'll notice that there's a window here with numbers, and you'll just dial the end of the pen up all the way until it's at 250 which is the Ovidrel dose. Now you're ready to inject. When you're doing your Ovidrel injection, it will be performed subcutaneously, and in the next part of the video, we'll go over exactly how to landmark and perform a subcutaneous injection.

When it comes to Ovidrel specifically, you'll take the clear cap off. There's still a green sheath over top of the needle. Take that off as well. And then when you're going to inject this in your stomach, which again, we'll talk more about in the next part of the video.

You'll put the needle tip in with the numbers facing up so you can see them when you're doing the injection.  When you put the needle into your skin, do it so that you can see the numbers when you're looking down in this window,  and then there's a flower on the end of this pen. You'll put your finger in the middle of the flower, and  then you'll push it all the way down. And you'll see in the window the number go, all the way back to zero. And when you're done, you'll see the zero there.  Then you'll pull the needle out of your skin and then you'll let go of the end of the pen.

How to Perform a Subcutaneous Injection

Now that you have your medication prepared, here's a video on how to perform a subcutaneous injection.

First, these injections are going to go into your abdomen. So you'll pick a spot two fingers away from your belly button and inject anywhere in your tummy.

The injection is going into that fatty layer of tissue right under the skin. So two fingers away anywhere in your tummy, just like this.
When you're doing your injections, you'll pick a spot, and then you'll rotate your sites. So try not to poke into exactly the same spot as you did already today or yesterday. Try to rotate the spots a little bit. Even a finger away is helpful.

When you're ready, you'll use an alcohol swab to clean the area that you're going to inject into, and then you'll give that a few seconds to dry. You'll take the cap off of your prepared needle and pinch your skin where you're going to do the injection. You'll inject at 90 degrees all the way in. Push the plunger on the syringe down until all of the medication has been delivered.

Then you can relax your skin and pull out the needle. A little bit of blood, a little bit of liquid might come out. That's okay. It's normal. You can use a tissue to hold the spot until the bleeding stops.

And then when you're done, make sure that you put your used needle into a sharps container or your medical waste bag.
