Dr. Daphne Chong Reproductive Endocrinologist, Markham Fertility Centre

What is the bravest thing you’ve ever said?’ asked the boy. ‘Help,’ said the horse. ‘Asking for help isn’t giving up,’ said the horse. ‘It’s refusing to give up.

Dr. Chong earned her medical degree at the University of Liverpool in the UK. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology followed by a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility with accreditation by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG UK). After practicing in the UK for more than 15 years, she further qualified for her Canadian specialty designation. She is currently licensed and board certified in both countries.

Having led multiple quality-improvement projects for optimizing hospital pathways, Dr. Chong continues to be passionate about enhancing patient experience. She was the national chairperson for her subspecialist peers and enjoys organizing educational events. She is currently engaged in a postgraduate research degree exploring non-invasive monitoring and assessment in fertility treatments, and was the recipient of a research proposal award.

In addition to reproductive medicine, being in the operating room sparks joy for Dr. Chong. She has a special interest in office gynecology, especially ambulatory hysteroscopy.

More About Dr. Chong

We asked each of our doctors some questions so you can learn about who they are as people, not just scientists and clinicians.

What motivates you?

I am motivated by the human resilience that I have the privilege to witness everyday through the people that I care for. As cheesy as it sounds, I feel grateful to be part of someone else’s story and inspire them to play the best hand they are dealt.

What is your message to patients who are struggling to create their family?

My patients will hear me say this often - that infertility is unique to other experiences in life where our brains are pre-conditioned to believe that effort equals reward. When you are struggling to create your family, you can do all the right things, but that coveted reward is yet to come. Be kind and give yourself grace, think only about 1 step instead of the next 100, remember that comparison is the thief of joy, everyone is own their own journey.

What would your patients say about you?

That I should be better at drawing by now. I care deeply that patients have a clear understanding of everything and I find it easiest to express that visually through drawings and flowcharts. When some areas of fertility treatments are not black or white, it is important that they feel empowered that we are making joint decisions together. (P.S. I continue to be amazed that patients ask for these scrap papers with my chicken scratches on them)
